David Karlak is a Mexican-American film director and artist who strives to tell ambitious high concept stories intertwined with his unique perspective on society, culture and technology. His films have been official selections at over 45 film festivals and nationally televised on PBS. His films have earned several awards, including a student Academy Award nomination, two Vimeo Staff Picks and two Shorts of the Week nods. His short film “Rise” was acquires by Warner Brothers with Roy Lee producing alongside Brian Oliver at New Republic Pictures. Karlak is also developing a second original pitch entitled “Outliers” at 20th Century Fox with Peter Chernin producing. Karlak is attached to direct both films.
Karlak was a founding member and the Creative Director at Nurulize, a Virtual Reality technology company that was acquired by Sony Pictures in 2019. Karlak directed a fully immersive VR experience for "Alien: Covenant" called "In Utero", with Ridley Scott overseeing as executive producer along with 20th Century Fox and RSA Films.
Most recently, Karlak has been working on a new short film entitled "Azul” which was awarded a grant by EPIC Games for its innovative approach to visual effects using Unreal Engine.
